Birstwith in 2017 and plans for 2018

2017 has been quite a year for Birstwith. We supported the tour de Yorkshire, raised funds for dementia , opened our gardens, made scarecrows and shouted encouragement to our pigs at the fundraising BBQ. Birstwith in Bloom secured a silver gilt award and the BHS summer show had record entries and record attendance. What an achievment for such a small village. Without the support of the residents the show would not survive. The committee has already been working hard to improve standards and make our show a must visit attraction.   2018’s early show schedule is almost ready with a few new classes and lots of exciting things to enter. I know in the depths of winter it seems a long way away and planting is just a dream but browsing the seed catalogues is the perfect way to spend a winters afternoon.

Birstwith in Bloom will continue its hard work with lots of plans for the coming year, such as a woodland reserve, planting at Clapham Green, wildlife area beside the reading rooms, shrub and bulb planting and a continuing involvement with the village school. We intend to re-enter the in Bloom competition in 2019 with a gold medal firmly on the horizon.

The BHS team would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Happy gardening,

Maureen Smith.
